“The King of All Media”, Howard Stern is a major national radio and TV personality, media mogul, humorist, actor, producer and best selling author.
Howard Stern currently hosts The Howard Stern Show three-four days a week (Monday-Wednesday/Thursday with highlighrs airing the rest of the week) on Howard 100 and 101, from the New York city based headquarters (with his own multi-million dollar studio) on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio. On Fridays, Best of the Week airs, playing replays of old Howard Stern shows from the week past. Replays of the show can be heard throughout the day on Howard 100 and various times on Howard 101.
The self-proclaimed “The King of All Media” (a humorous reference to Michael Jackson’s appellation “The King of Pop”) has been dubbed a “shock jock” for his highly controversial use of scatological, sexual and racial humor. Stern has said that the show was never about shocking people, but primarily intended to offer his honest opinions on a gamut of issues (ranging from world affairs to problems among his own staff and his own personal life). Though controversial, he is one of the highest-paid radio personalities in the United States (salary and bonuses come to over $150 million/year for 5 years) and the most fined personality (over $2,000,000 to date) in radio broadcast history.
He is best known for his national radio show, which for many years was syndicated by CBS Radio on FM radio stations (and a few AM stations) throughout the United States (estimated listenership in excess of 12,000,000). In every major market his daily 3+ hour program aired in, he was consistently the #1 rated show for men for over 8 years, generating over $100 million a year to his network of stations in advertising revenue.
Howard Stern is an avid supporter of all advertisers who promote their products and services on his daily show. He is single-handedly credited with having help launch the mega beverage Snapple, with revising and revitalizing the image of Heineken beer and before Anna Nicole Smith, he launched TrimSpa to millions of overweight listeners (many of whom are women). He is best known for his outrageous voicing of many commercials ….that do not sound like they are commercials, but rather a continuation of things he would talk about during his show. Can you imagine Howard burping during a Heineken “rant”…..HHHEINEKEN….I LOVE HEINEKEN!!!”.
Over the years, The Howard Stern Radio Network has been involved in many advertising buys on the Stern show for their Clients, one of whom, Travelworm, brought Howard to Las Vegas 2 years in a row to do his show.
After tiring of the implied and real threats of further FCC fines and CBS management constraints, he opted to leave for Sirius Satellite Radio. His last terrestrial radio broadcast was on December 16, 2005. He began broadcasting on the subscription-based Sirius satellite radio service on January 9, 2006. Satellite Radio, like Cable and Satellite TV, does not come under the purview of the FCC, because these are adult subscriber only networks, unlike “free” radio and TV, which anyone of any age can tune into.
In addition to radio, Stern has ventured into publishing, television, feature films, and music. He has written two books both of which were N.Y. Times #1 best sellers, Private Parts, (which he adapted into a box office winning motion picture, opening #1 throughout the U.S.) and Miss America. Stern’s television endeavors include a variety show on New York City’s WWOR-TV, a nightly E! show documenting his radio broadcasts, a similar CBS program that competed with Saturday Night Live for a time, “Howard On-Demand” for digital cable subscribers in various markets, and Son of the Beach, a parody of Baywatch for FX which Stern executive produced.
In 2006, Howard Stern was elected into Time Magazine’s “Time 100: The People who shape our world” and was ranked #7 in Forbes Magazine’s 2006 annual Celebrity 100. NewsMax.com Magazine’s “Top 25 Talk Radio Host” list selected Stern as the thirteenth most influential host in the nation.
